10 most popular films on Netflix: August 2022

Welcome back to our recurring roundup of the most popular films on Netflix this week. It’s been a hell of a ride for Netflix bosses in recent weeks. Subscription numbers have been plummeting faster than Tom Hanks in Sully and the streaming giant’s decision to put an end to shared subscriptions hasn’t enamoured those who have remained on-side. Still, Netflix continues to provide some of the most exciting film releases on offer, as below’s top ten list reveals.

Sing 2 and The Man From Toronto remain in the top ten, as they have for the last five weeks. Despite some harsh reviews, the action comedy – starring Woody Harrelson and Kevin Hart – is still drawing in viewers on mass, accruing an additional 8 million hours of viewing time.

Persuasion and The Sea Beast have also remained in the charts this week. The former, an adaptation of the famous Jane Austen Novel starring Dakota Johnson as Anne Elliot, has garnered 11 million hours of viewing time so far. The Sea Beast, meanwhile, has slipped down to the number three spot this week, having spent four weeks in the chart and amassing 21 million hours of viewing time.

This week has also seen the arrival of a couple of new contenders, including Purple Hearts, which is currently sitting at number two. The film tells the story of a love affair between an American soldier and an aspiring singer-songwriter. Despite being hammered by critics and receiving an average of 33 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes, the sickly-sweet offering continues to be one of Netflix’s most popular films. New additions this week also include Spider Man: Far From Home, Shania Twain: Not Just A Girl, and Line Of Duty.

The Gray Man continues to hold the top spot this week. The action blockbuster, starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evens, has accrued 96 million hours in viewing time, despite only being on Netflix for the last two weeks. With its well-honed script and hair-raising action sequences, it’s easy to see why.
