Arsenal 1-2 Manchester City – Goals and highlights – Premier League 21/22

Hello everyone and welcome in to our first Premier League live blog of 2022. It’s Arsenal vs Manchester City at the Emirates to kick off the new year and we’ll have all the latest updates as Pep Guardiola‘s side look to extend their lead at the top of the table.

Arsenal vs Manchester City FINAL SCORE: 1-2

This is the beginning of our Arsenal vs Manchester City live blog, as we bring you all the latest updates from this New Year’s Day fixture. The updates nearest the top will be the most recent ones.

Full time: IT’S OVER!!! CITY SNATCH THE VICTORY!!!

Manchester City win it 2-1, coming from behind after Saka‘s first half goal. A Mahrez penalty and Gabriel red card in the space of a few minutes changed the game, before Rodri found the winner in stoppage time. The result puts Pep Guardiola‘s side 11 points clear at the top. Even if they’ve played more games, that’s huge.

Minute 90+3: GOAL!!! RODRI WITH THE STOPPAGE TIME GOAL!!!

They’ve done it! De Bruyne puts it into the Arsenal penalty area, the ball falls for Rodri and the Spaniard slots it past Ramsdale. He whips off his shirt to celebrate what looks to be a crucial victory.

Minute 90+2: Manchester City’s freekick routine doesn’t come off

Manchester City win a freekick out wide, in a dangerous position. But, instead of putting it in the middle, they waste it with a freekick routine that doesn’t come off.

Minute 90: Six minutes to go

Manchester City keep pushing, but they’re running out of time. There are six more minutes to go now. Let’s see if they, or Arsenal, can grab a stoppage time winner.

Minute 85: Into Ramsdale’s grateful arms

Another long Manchester City attack ends with a Raheem Sterling shot, which is deflected into the arms of Aaron Ramsdale. Arsenal are holding on what would be a brave point.

Minute 82: Manchester City can’t break through

They’re probing, but Manchester City can’t break through an Arsenal back line that has really stepped up following the Gabriel red card. They’re cutting out all crosses and through balls.

Minute 77: Ederson has to clear

Arsenal launch a counter attack with Thomas Partey, before a poor decision from Laporte leaves a dangerous ball to be dealt with by Ederson. That was a vital intervention from the goalkeeper and not the first mistake of the afternoon from the centre-back.

Minute 74: An offside chance for Saka

He was well offside and the flag did go up after the piece of play, but Saka is allowed to finish the move as he races towards the Manchester City goal, ultimately having his shot blocked and hurting himself a little in the process. That got the home fans on their feet, though.

Minute 71: Pinball football in the Arsenal box

Manchester City are putting a few dangerous balls into the Arsenal penalty area and the home side just about manage to scramble clear each time. But, not without a few dangerous ricochets.

Minute 65: Can Manchester City take advantage of this situation?

Both coaches make substitutions in response to the red card, with Ilkay Gundogan on for Gabriel Jesus and Rob Holding for Martin Odegaard. Let’s see if Manchester City can kick on and take all three points.

Minute 59: A RED CARD FOR ARSENAL!!!

It’s all happening at the Emirates. Arsenal suffer yet another setback, as Gabriel is shown a red card for a second bookable offence in midfield on Gabriel Jesus. He sarcastically applauds as he walks off, leaving the home side with 10 men.

Minute 58: Ake clears off the line

Arsenal almost retake the lead straight away, the ball bounces past Ederson. Nathan Ake does well to get back and clear off the line, before Martinelli blasts the rebound over.

Minute 56: GOAL!!! PENALTY GIVEN AND MAHREZ SCORES!!!

After a VAR check, the penalty is given to Manchester City, infuriating Xhaka and Arsenal. It takes several minutes for the spot kick to actually be taken, but Mahrez makes no mistake when he fires off his effort. It’s 1-1!

Minute 53: Manchester City call for a penalty

Manchester City want a penalty on the same patch of grass where Arsenal called for one in the first half. This time, it’s Bernardo Silva who goes down under the challenge of Xhaka. Let’s see if they give this one…

Minute 48: Tension to start the second half

It’s already feisty at the start of this second half, as Martinelli and Rodri come together just outside the area. The Arsenal players are furious, but it’s no foul and just a corner.

Minute 46: No substitutions at the break

There are no changes from either side at half time, so we have the same 22 players to start this second half. Let’s see if Manchester City can mount a comeback.

Half time: Arsenal lead and deservedly so

Arsenal go into the break with a 1-0 lead and they deserve to be in front. In addition to Saka‘s goal on the half hour mark, Martinelli has come close on a couple more occasions. The Gunners could even have had a penalty before they scored their goal.

Minute 43: Even closer from Martinelli

It’s Gabriel Martinelli again and he eases past Joao Cancelo before dinking a low shot towards the far corner. It bounces just wide, but would have been one of the goals of the season had it gone in.

Minute 38: Close from Martinelli

Arsenal come close to making it 2-0, with Gabriel Martinelli causing problems from Arsenal‘s left once again. His shot is curled just off target, very similar to De Bruyne‘s effort earlier in the half.

Minute 35: No response from City

Manchester City haven’t found a way of getting back into this game, at least not yet. Arsenal are first to every ball, first and second balls, and look comfortable at this point.

Minute 30: GOAL!!! SAKA SCORES THE FIRST GOAL OF 2022!!!

Arsenal take the lead and it’s Bukayo Saka who scores the goal, the first in the Premier League in 2022. Again, the Gunners attack down the left and then Kieran Tierney crosses for Saka to first-time it in.

Minute 25: Only the referee slows this one down

This has been end to end and a thrilling watch so far. The only dip in the excitement comes as Stuart Attwell needs his radio changed. Apart from that, it has been breathless so far.

Minute 19: De Bruyne fires over and he knows it was close

From distance, Kevin de Bruyne has a pop and it curls high and wide. But, on replays it seems it was closer than it first looks. De Bruyne certainly thinks it was close too, given his facial expression.

Minute 16: Ederson saves from Martinelli

Gabriel Martinelli is often finding space down the left and he races down that flank again, getting inside the penalty area and getting a shot off. But, Ederson is equal to it.

Minute 14: So close from Ruben Dias

After working the ball around the outside the of the Arsenal penalty area, Manchester City put a ball in the middle of the area and Ruben Dias finds enough space to get a free header. But, his glancing effort bounces just wide.

Minute 10: Arsenal want a penalty… but don’t get it

Arsenal burst forward with pace and Martin Odegaard receives the ball inside the area, with Ederson rushing out. The goalkeeper appears to catch the Arsenal player, but nothing is given by neither on-pitch referee nor by VAR.

Minute 5: Just wide from Gabriel Jesus

Manchester City play a short corner and work a good cross towards Gabriel Jesus and Aymeric Laporte. They almost get in each other’s way, but the striker gets his head to it and his attempt drops just wide.

Minute 4: Bernardo Silva’s backheel doesn’t come off

Bernardo Silva goes for the spectacular, with a backheel, but his audacious attempt is blocked. Manchester City look comfortable and have started as the better side.
