It’s always a special occasion when Real Madrid visit San Mames in Bilbao and the home crowd will be up for this one, even if Athletic are missing eight players and even if Real Madrid are down 11. We might two unfamiliar starting XIs, but we should see plenty of entertainment.

Athletic Club vs Real Madrid FINAL SCORE: 1-2

This is the beginning of our Athletic Club vs Real Madrid live blog, with all the updates from this Wednesday night clash following on from here and with the most recent entries nearest the top.

That’s it! It’s full time and Real Madrid hold on for the 2-1 win and the three points. All the goals came in the opening 10 minutes, as Karim Benzema scored twice and as Oihan Sancet pulled one back with what turned out to be the final goal of the evening.

Minute 90+1: Agirrezabala cuts out Peter’s chance

Peter has been introduced for Real Madrid and almost has a great counter-attacking opportunity, but Agirrezabala rushes out of his goal well to clear the danger as the youngster looked to break into space. He then makes a save from Jovic to keep Athletic‘s hopes alive.

Minute 86: Courtois holds on!

Inaki Williams passes to his brother Nico with a brilliant through ball, but Courtois is excellent. He comes out, holds on and gathers. That was nearly an equaliser.

Minute 83: Nacho heads Muniain’s freekick clear

Athletic have a freekick in a dangerous position, but Nacho jumps tall to get his head onto the freekick put in by Iker Muniain. It then goes out for a corner, but that comes to nothing.

Minute 80: Hazard comes close to a goal

Julen Agirrezabala does really well to get a hand to an Eden Hazard shot to keep Athletic just a goal behind. Real Madrid has several bodies in the area, but it was the Belgian who took the shot and it was a decent one.

Minute 77: A dangerous cross across Courtois’ six-yard box

Athletic are starting to push forward now and a very dangerous cross flashes across Thibaut Courtois‘ penalty area. Nobody can get on the end of it, though, and Real Madrid maintain their 2-1 lead.

Minute 61: So close from Williams

Half of San Mames thinks it’s a goal as Inaki Williams curls an effort just wide of the post, so close that it brushes the side netting on its way off target. But, Real Madrid still lead 2-1.

Minute 64: Shouts for a handball penalty

There are some shouts from the home crowd for a penalty for handball, but it’s nothing. Fede Valverde was in the middle of it, but it’s play on and no spot kick.

Minute 52: Defence is beating attack

Both teams are looking imprecise in attack right now, while both sides’ defences are on top form. The centre-backs and full-backs are cutting out everything, helped by the poor touches from the attackers.

Minute 48: Militao with the vital intervention

Athletic attack early on in this second half and look for Inaki Williams inside the Real Madrid area, but Eder Militao is there to make a vital block. Williams was through on goal otherwise.

Minute 46: It’s time for the second half of Athletic vs Real Madrid

Here we go then! The start of the first half was intense. Let’s see what the start of this second half produces at San Mames as these two giants of Spanish football go head to head once again.

Half time: Real Madrid lead thanks to their bright start

We saw a wild opening 10 minutes here as Karim Benzema scored twice and Oihen Sancet once, but there wasn’t much more goalmouth action over the final 35 minutes of the half. It should kick off again after the break, so stay tuned with us.

Minute 39: Wide from Kroos

He started off shooting and he set up the opener, but Toni Kroos doesn’t come close to scoring here with a long-range strike that rolls well wide of the Athletic Club goal.

Minute 35: This game has mellowed, but don’t expect it to stay that way

After the wild start, both teams have caught their breath a little. It’s gotten a little less intense, but don’t expect it to stay that way. This is Athletic Club vs Real Madrid, remember.

Minute 28: Vinicius vs Williams is one to watch

Two of the fastest players in LaLiga Santander are sharing the same flank, with Vinicius going up against Inaki Williams. It’s a fascinating battle and both players are working hard defensively on the other.

Minute 24: Balenziaga with the volley

Standing a few metres behind the opposition penalty area, Mikel Balenziaga sees the ball come to him and he strikes it with a volley. It’s powerful, but it’s wide of Courtois‘ post.

Minute 21: Well over from Vencedor

Athletic Club work their best chance since their goal, but Unai Vencedor can’t take it. Although the ball is teed up to him in a good position on the edge of the area, he blasts his attempt well over.

Minute 17: Too tame from Camavinga

Eduardo Camavinga is the latest to try his luck from distance, but his long-range strike is low and easily saved by Julen Agirrezabala. It’s a minor warning from Real Madrid to their hosts.

Minute 15: Athletic have improved

Inspired by Sancet‘s goal, Athletic Club have dramatically improved. They’re pressuring Real Madrid, although they haven’t been able to make Courtois sweat again… for now…

Game on, it seems! What a wild opening 10 minutes, with Oihan Sancet now firing in a brilliant goal to respond to Benzema‘s early brace. Athletic Club still trail, but only 2-1 now.

It’s Benzema again! Although he was in an offside position, the final ball was from an Athletic Club player, so he’s onside and he finishes as well as he has been doing all season. Although he hurts himself in the act of scoring, it seems he’ll be fine to continue.

It’s another shot from distance and this time it’s Karim Benzema putting it past Julen Agirrezabala. Kroos is the one to set up the Frenchman, who curls it brilliantly. It’s 1-0 to the league leaders.

Minute 2: Kroos with the first shot

Toni Kroos has been shooting from distance time and time again this season and he starts this game off with a daisy cutter from just outside the Athletic Club area. It’s easily saved by Julen Agirrezabala.
