Bayern Munich vs Barcelona: Xavi keen to change Barcelona’s recent history against Bayern Munich

Barcelona have come up short against Bayern Munich in recent seasons, but Xavi believes the Blaugrana are poised to change that.

The two European giants square off in a mouthwatering Champions League Group C clash on Tuesday, but the rivalry has been decidedly one-sided in recent years.

Bayern have won the last four meetings between the two clubs 17-4, which includes two 3-0 group stage wins last season, and an 8-2 thrashing in the 2020 quarter-finals.

Despite the struggles, Xavi is optimistic his side can end the negative run.

“I think there are a lot of expectations on us,” said Xavi. “The match doesn’t change anything, we can’t draw conclusions.

“Nine months have passed and everything looks different. We have improved in many aspects. We see ourselves as capable of competing. We are excited, we can win this match and change history.

“We are playing against one of the best clubs in the world and they have a great coach. We want to show what level we are at.”

Barcelona have never won away to Bayern, but Xavi is looking forward to the challenge of ending that streak.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a house of horror, it’s Bayern Munich,” he said. “I’ve seen both sides of the coin, goals for and against.

“Things are cyclical. We haven’t won on this pitch and this speaks to our difficulties. We’re looking forward to it.”

A lot has changed at Barcelona in recent times, especially after a transfer window that saw names like Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde join the club.

Along with players, Xavi believes his side have also changed in terms of mentality.

“A lot has changed, especially the mentality,” he said. “I told them that this was Barcelona and we had to run, have personality.

“The mentality has changed, we have gained in personality and mentality. The signings have helped us and the victories have given us confidence”.
