Bundesliga: Zorc steals Haaland’s limelight as he bids farewell to Borussia Dortmund

Saturday was an exciting day in Dortmund. In the build-up to the Bundesliga match between Borussia Dortmund and Hertha Berlin, the atmosphere was extremely emotional even before kick off.

The reason was that Dortmund bid farewell to three very special players, as well as other club figures who will also be leaving the club this summer.

The departure of sporting director Michael Zorc and left-back Marcel Schmelzer, two club legends, overshadowed the departure of even Erling Haaland.

The Norwegian said goodbye to the club, leaving after some impressive performances during his time there, but the fans wanted to remember two other individuals who have been with the club for a long time.

Zorc was the priority, though. His life has revolved around Dortmund. First as a player, and then in his post-playing days. In total, 44 years of his life were dedicated to Dortmund.

Schmelzer‘s case is also noteworthy because since he made his debut with the first team in 2008, having come through at the club, he has never spent any time away.

During his time at Borussia Dortmund, Zorc experienced a Champions League victory (1997), was on the verge of bankruptcy with the club and experienced their spectacular comeback under Jurgen Klopp, winning the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012.

In front of a spectacular tribute from the crowd, Zorc was unable to hold back his tears.

For Haaland, there was a nice tribute from the club, who presented him with a bouquet of flowers and a picture. In addition, the stands remembered him with chants in his favour, acknowledging the number of goals he had scored during his time at the club.

Also saying farewell to Dortmund were three first-team players who had been with the club for several years: Axel Witsel, Roman Burki and Dan-Axel Zagadou.
