Late Griezmann winner snatches three points for Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid came out on top 2-1 over Porto in one of the wildest finishes to a Champions League encounter in recent memory.

The two teams battled to a 0-0 draw in the same fixture last season, and all signs pointed to a similar result in what was a match bereft of chances for much of the 90 minutes.

Neither goalkeeper was tested in the opening 45 minutes, but Atletico thought they had finally opened the scoring five minutes after the break.

Koke‘s low driven effort found the back of the net, only for VAR to intervene and overturn the goal due to offside.

It wasn’t until the 81st minute that the match burst into life. Mehdi Taremi went down in the Atletico penalty area, but rather than winning the penalty he was looking for, he was shown a second yellow, ending his night early.

The sending off, and an injury to Porto’s Otavio, resulted in a lengthy stoppage time that didn’t lack drama.

First, Atletico thought they had snatched all three points when Mario Hermoso‘s deflected shot found the back of the net.

Unfortunately for the defender, he went from hero to zero just five minutes later after conceding a penalty for handball.

Mateus Uribe stepped up and fired past Jan Oblak to seemingly secure a draw for the away side.

Instead, with every Atletico player forward for a corner, Axel Witsel managed to flick the ball into the path of substitute Antoine Griezmann, who headed home in the 101st minute to cap off a dramatic encounter.
