Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid – FINAL SCORE: 0-2

This is the start of our Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid live blog, with updates from this top-of-the-table LaLiga Santander fixture following on from here. As always, the entries nearest the top are the most recent ones.

FULL TIME: Real Sociedad 0-2 Real Madrid

Real Madrid secured their eighth win in a row thanks to goal from Vinicius Junior and Luka Jovic, but the injury suffered by Karim Benzema will cause some concern at the club.

Minute 87: Remiro prevents Vinicius

Militao made two big interceptions and then played a beautiful defence-splitting pass for Vinicius to run on to, which left the Real Madrid forward one on one with Remiro, but his effort was comfortably saved by the Real Sociedad goalkeeper. It is worth saying again: Militao has been phenomenal today. What a player.

Minute 81: Final changes for Real Madrid

Marco Asensio and Fede Valverde have been brought on in the final substitution window for Real Madrid, with Rodrygo Goes and Toni Kroos coming off. Eden Hazard and Isco remain on the bench for yet another game.

Minute 77: Impressive defending by Camavinga

Isak was heading towards goal in the area, but Camavinga put pressure on the Real Sociedad striker before making a good sliding challenge, to which Alaba congratulated the young Frenchman.

Minute 69: Isak shoots over

The space opened up for Isak 25 yards out from goal and he tried his luck, but his shot went miles over the bar.

Minute 68: Double change for La Real

Real Sociedad have made two more substitutions, with Joseba Zaldua and Portu coming on for Andoni Gorosabel and Adnan Januzaj.

Minute 64: Substitution for Real Madrid

Casemiro, who came into this match on four yellow cards and was at risk of missing the derby next week with a booking, has been replaced by Eduardo Camavinga.

Minute 61: Double change for Real Sociedad

Imanol has turned to his bench by bringing on Benat Turrientes and Ander Barrenetxea for Ander Guevara and Alexander Sorloth, which indicates a change of shape for La Real.

Luka Jovic has now got his name on the scoresheet after providing a beautiful assist for Vinicius’ opener. Luka Modric’s outswinging corner was headed down Casemiro, and Jovic was the quickest to react as he headed home from close range. Real Sociedad 0-2 Real Madrid.

Minute 52: Vinicius shoots wide

Vinicius and Jovic once again combined in the area, but this time the Brazilian’s shot towards the top corner was hide, wide and not very handsome.

Vinicius came in from the left, played a one-two with Jovic and then fired into the bottom left corner. Really good finish, and an impressive assist from Jovic. Real Sociedad 0-1 Real Madrid.

Minute 46: Great chance for Real Madrid

Sorloth’s loose pass inside his own half went straight to Jovic, who then picked out Rodrygo, but his shot was straight at Remiro.

HALF TIME: Real Sociedad 0-0 Real Madrid

The first half comes to a close without any goals but with quite a few talking points, including the injury to Karim Benzema. Vinicius Junior is causing a lot of problems for La Real’s defence, while Mikel Oyarzabal is in the thick of the action for the hosts. The game became increasing end-to-end once Benzema went off, so let’s see if that trend continues in the second half – and if we are treated to any goals.

Minute 44: Oyarzabal fires into side netting

Sorloth kept the ball alive in the Real Madrid box with two headers, followed by one by Isak and Courtois’ palm away, but Oyarzabal could only fire the loose ball into the side netting.

Minute 39: Excellent defending by Militao

The ball was pulled back to Isak inside the area and he got his shot away, but Militao threw his body in the way to make yet another block. What a performance so far by the Brazilian.

Minute 38: Change of positions

Curiously, Dani Carvajal has now gone out to left-back and Ferland Mendy has shifted across to left-back. This is likely due to the threat that Oyarzabal and Diego Rico are causing down La Real’s left.

Minute 31: Dangerous play by La Real

Two crosses in quick succession by Oyarzabal and then Diego Rico right across the Real Madrid six-yard box could so easily have resulted in a goal, but Isak could not get on the end of either cross.

Minute 26: Vinicius scythed down

Vinicius showed his pace and was bearing down on goal, with only Zubeldia to beat before he reached Remiro, but the Real Sociedad centre-back cynically brought him down just outside the box.

Minute 22: Rodrygo forces a save

Rodrygo ran directly at Diego Rico, shifted onto his right foot and got a shot away, which Remiro could only turn behind for a corner.

Minute 20: Vinicius shot saved

Vinicius again came in from the left and got a shot away at goal, but again it was easily saved by Alex Remiro.

Minute 17: Substitution for Real Madrid

Benzema has made way for Luka Jovic, who has the chance to show why Real Madrid paid 60 million euros for him in the summer of 2020.

Minute 16: Benzema goes to ground

Benzema has dropped to one knee and looks in pain, so Real Madrid are now preparing a substitution.

Minute 15: Benzema with a knock

Thibaut Courtois’ long free-kick towards Karim Benzema saw the Frenchman land awkwardly. It’s something the Real Madrid bench will be keeping an eye on over the next few minutes.

Minute 12: Mendy goes down

Ferland Mendy appeared to pull up and soon went to ground, but he was soon able to continue.

Minute 11: Great block by Militao

Diego Rico’s deft cross towards Alex Isak looked as though the Real Sociedad striker was going to get a free header away, but Eder Militao got in the way to make a crucial block.

Minute 3: First shot of the game

Vinicius Junior picked up the ball on the halfway line, carried it forward, played a one-two with Karim Benzema and then sent a shot towards goal from 20 yards out, but it rolled into the arms of Alex Remiro.

The Basques, for their part, have had an impressive season themselves so far and currently find themselves occupying third place, seven points off top spot and level with champions Atletico Madrid in second.

La Real will be desperate to reverse their recent run of form, having lost to Espanyol last time out in LaLiga Santander and losing to Monaco in the Europa League previously.
