Serie A: AC Milan pile pressure on leaders Inter with victory over Mourinho’s Roma

Olivier Giroud, Junior Messias and Rafael Leao each netted once to give AC Milan a well-earned 3-1 win over Roma at the Stadio San Siro on Thursday, to put pressure on rivals Inter who didn’t play.

The Rossoneri are now one point behind Serie A leaders Inter, who have one game in hand, while Roma currently sit seventh in the table, out of the European qualification positions.

It took the hosts just eight minutes to take the lead, as Giroud converted from the spot after Tammy Abraham handled the ball inside the box.

Roma almost replied instantly, with Mike Maignan producing a superb save to deny Nicolo Zaniolo, before Abraham did pull one back to make up for his mistake on Milan’s first goal.

Stefano Pioli’s men hit the ground running after the break, but they were unlucky as Brahim Diaz‘s strike from the edge of the box crashed against the woodwork.

Rick Karsdorp was shown the second yellow card after a challenge on Theo Hernandez and Roma went down to 10 men with 16 minutes to go. Alessandro Florenzi was assigned with the task of take the freekick from just outside the box and he unleashed a thunderous effort, as Milan hit the woodwork again.

Then, Zlatan Ibrahimovic came off the bench to set up Leao in the 82th minute, with the Milan forward netting his team’s third to put the game to bed.

Roma eventually finished the game with nine men as Gianluca Mancini was sent off after giving away a penalty on Leao in stoppage time. Ibrahimovic stepped up, but he failed to beat Rui Patricio from the spot.
