Roma have signed Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan from Arsenal until the end of the season.
The 24-year-old made just two Premier League starts for the Gunners in the first half of this season, and he has been eager to get more minutes under his belt to bolster his career.
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta stopped Maitland-Niles from making a move to Everton during last summer’s transfer window, but the club have now given the Englishman the opportunity to go out on loan.
“I am just delighted to be here and can’t wait to crack on,” Maitland-Niles told Roma‘s official media channels.
“I want to help the team and show what I can do as a player.
“Thank you to the fans for the support they’ve already shown me – I hope we can go on to do something great by the end of the season.”
A versatile player
Maitland-Niles, who has five caps for England, will wear the No.15 shirt at Roma, as the Giallorossi prepare for a big match against Juventus on Sunday.
The club’s general manager, Tiago Pinto, believes Maitland-Niles will be able to show his credentials as a versatile midfielder who can play in the middle and on both flanks.
“With Maitland-Niles we are bringing to Roma a young player who fits well with the profile we were looking for to improve the squad and cover a number of different positions,” Pinto said.
“When we spoke to Ainsley we were really struck by his enthusiasm about the prospect of joining our group and having the chance to work with Jose Mourinho.”
Roma are currently in seventh place in Serie A, six points away from a Champions League spot.
