Antoine Griezmann stepped up when Atletico Madrid needed him most on Tuesday night, as he scored the opener against Porto and helped Los Rojiblancos clinch qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League.
Yannick Carrasco was sent off with 23 minutes to go and Wendell left Porto down to 10 men shortly after too, with Griezmann producing a brilliant assist on the counter to set up Angel Correa for Atletico‘s second goal, which all but sealed the victory.
Porto looked dominant up until Griezmann‘s opener, but they lost the plot after the Frenchman put the visitors ahead, with Diego Simeone‘s team progressing to the knockout stages.
Crucial contribution in the Champions League
Only Griezmann and Luis Suarez had scored this season in the Champions League before Correa and Rodrigo de Paul netted one each late in the match against Porto.
The France international’s opener was his seventh goal in 2021/22, with Griezmann being Atletico‘s top scorer in Europe with four goals.
Despite sitting bottom of the table before their final game of the group stage, Atleti took advantage of Liverpool’s victory away at AC Milan and secured qualification to the next round at the Estadio do Dragao, where the Little Prince was able to turn into a dragon.
